Lilium NYC Gerber Group

Lilium opened on Monday, herpes December 12th as the new underbar of Union Square’s W Hotel and the latest addition to the Gerber Group.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Gerber Group, ampoule they are known for creating unique venues and revolutionizing the original concept of “hotel bar.” Unlike the notorious trend in NYC nightlife, Lilium’s intent is to leave the superficial at the door. No guest lists, no promoters, and no obligation to buy bottles.

The dark, sexy, cave-like room with black curvaceous couches inside, was designed by Gulla Jonsdottir- an impressive, not to mention gorgeous female architect and designer. Gulla is known for some of the most striking hotel, restaurant and nightclub designs in the world, landing her the Hospitality Design’s “Wave of the Future” award for her art in 2009.

Gulla’s vision for Gerber’s newest addition was inspired by lilies. (Fun Fact: Lilium stands for Lily in Latin) The idea, she explained, was to evoke “a wild floral cave in the middle of New York in this subterranean basement.” The lilies she brought in are made of black steel, adding to the mysterious, rock ‘n’ roll vibe which makes up the club.

Inside you have an enchanting menu of midsummer night’s drinks. I enjoyed the Black Lily, made with vodka, fresh blackberry juice and champagne, which I absolutely adored. ($14)

For dinner or late night snack, the menu has a variety of small bites, like Fig & Proscuitto Flatbread, Grilled Lamb Kebab, Maitake Mushroom Tempura, or Warm Assorted Cookies & Ice Cream for a sweeter approach. (All under $20.)

Lilium is open from 6pm – 4am every Monday-Sat. My recommendations are as follows:

  • Lilium is good for getting to know your date through the perfect dinner + drinks combination= If you prefer a full dinner first complimented by drinks, visit restaurant Olives upstairs. Olives best known for it’s celebrity chef, Todd English, who musters up a delicious menu.
  • If dinner goes well, you don’t have to stray far for the perfect drink. Walk around the corner or through the restaurant right downstairs to Lilium.
  • The neighborhood of Union Square is not your usual West Village, Soho or Uptown ruckus. It emanates intimacy & class. You’ll feel your own level of exclusivity, and your date will be pleasantly impressed.

Lilium is located in the basement of the W Hotel, Union Square
