In fashion, ailment with every season comes the proclamation that “(insert color here) is the new black!” Well, information pills all due respect to the deepest and darkest achromatic shade, but there happen to be not one, but three colors taking this spring by storm. Greens, purples and pinks figured prominently in a majority of the SS12 collections, with designers serving up myriad ways to wear each of them. As this power trio of pigments proves, the old trope of the Rule of Three holds true; wear any of the aforementioned colors on their own, or wear them all at once if you so choose. Just know that without them, you may as well be left out in the cold.

If you’re going to integrate one color into your spring lineup, make it mint. Admittedly, the notion of a verdant shade being popular for spring (a season symbolized by all things green) may not be too much of a stretch. Yet while hues of the bottle and kelly variety made their respective appearances on some of the SS12 runways, there’s something so — for lack of a better word — fresh about the pale, frosty greens that were practically omnipresent in all of the major fashion capitals, at shows from Marc Jacobs to Yves Saint Laurent.

At 3.1 Phillip Lim, lavender pieces were colorblocked alongside white and creamsicle orange, while mirror prints in various lurid shades of purple abounded at Prabal Gurung. At Versus, the regal hue was given a sporty twist, as cheerleader-inspired shifts in pale lilac with black piping and carwash pleats scored big.

In keeping with the saccharine candy-colored trend to emerge this season, the airy, light pinks spotted at Ralph Lauren, Nina Ricci and Givenchy were feminine but never juvenile. Afraid of looking too precious? Instead of a full skirt, a frilly dress or a twin set, choose edgier pieces like an open-weave knit or a zippy parka.
