What’s a ‘megging’ you ask? Well it’s the buzzy hybrid wordplay for the K-Patz of slacks, the Brangelina of bottoms: leggings for men. The bastard child of the omnipresent skinny jean, meggings are now all the rage. Since leggings took over the runways and street for women, and after boyfriend jeans, boyfriend blazers and boyfriend sweaters, it might just be time for you to borrow a look from your girl friends.

As Good Morning America recently reported, high end designersviral fashion 2013 givenchy riccardo tisci fall winter 2012 runway meggings leggings trend shopping kanye west justin bieber little wayne like Givenchy, Phillip Lim, J.W. Anderson, Henrik Vibskov and more have showcased male models during fashion shows in stretchy, body hugging pants worn with long blazers, oversized sweaters and incredibly, only sometimes shorts. But what is shown on a model body on the Paris catwalks can’t possibly work in real life, can it? Au contraire, according to Phillip Salem, the owner of New York designer boutique Owen NYC, “meggings have been selling out like crazy”. Popular and stylish male celebrities like Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Lenny Kravitz, Bryanboy and Russel Brand have already rocked colorful, printed and solid versions. Even Kanye West paired skin tight leather meggings with his infamous Givenchy leather skirt at the Hurricane Sandy relief 12-12-12 charity concert. Would Weezy and Yeezy lead us astray?

Alas, this is not the case. In addition to many mainstream news sources like ABC doing features on them, some everytown mall-brand stores are already stocking their shelves with spandex. Uniqlo, American Apparel, H&M and Urban Outfitters all carry leggings for men. Granted, these stores pride themselves on trendy, fashion forward/ironic offerings for hipsters, but –gasp — could this look soon be falling into the Gap?

Staunch wearers of meggings insist it’s the comfort, the versatility of layering their meggings, the warmth and second skin feel of meggings that has them sliding into theirs daily. Non-fans, like GQ senior editor, Will Welch, simply say, “don’t do it.”

If you are up for the challenge, there are some key points to mull before getting a ‘meg up’ on this tricky trend:  Are you comfortable with your body? Are you comfortable with everyone else being comfortable with your body? Right smack in their face? Where will you put your keys? What’s your stance on going commando (underwear options for such an, ahem, illuminating article of clothing are slim)? And how many of your friends have Instagram?

At the end of the day, this reporter is just glad my editor isn’t a sadist who enforces hands-on trials of trends or else I’d be in quite a tight predicament.
