MBFW Berlin Cultivates Global Talent

a destination filled with people and vision that skillfully revive high fashion by slicing away any familiar approach. Buyers, ed
designers and select fashion media took in unsullied perspective from runway and trade shows as well as private parties held during Berlin Fashion Week Jan. 14-19.

Held twice yearly, capsule
Berlin Fashion Week includes Mercedes-Benz shows at the Greek revival style Brandenburg Gate. Over 50 designers from Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Greece, Poland, Switzerland and other countries presented Autumn/Winter 2014 collections. Two known faces in the audience this season were Elizabeth Hurley and Georgia May Jagger who starred in a new Mercedes-Benz GLA campaign shot by Serge Leblon.

We are proud to have successfully accomplished the 14th season of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. The atmosphere was great and it is exciting to see how Berlin continues to evolve into the destination for discovering the brightest new fashion talent from the region. This season we had eleven designers who debuted at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin and we are proud to continuously provide them a platform to present their creativity globally”, says Jarrad Clark, vice president and global creative director of IMG Fashion Events and Properties.

Berlin Fashion Week runway

True to form, young designer Hien Le kicked off the shows with his inspired German-made designs. Nominated “best newcomer” by international fashion trade magazine Sportswear International, the designer this season offered a collection of charcoals and nudes enlightened with touches of crimson, turquoise and plaid.

Saint-Petersburg Technology and Design Academy graduate Alena Akhmadullina launched her Russian fairytale-inspired label in 2001 for Russia’s elite women. Presented by Mercedes-Benz and Elle, this season’s ethereal collection brought many belted silhouettes to the stage in a beam of rich sunset, sandstone, chocolate, jade and moss shades that meshed perfectly with surprise patterned and metallic pieces.

Chairs folded on Friday after the Studio Kaprol runway show featuring emerging menswear and womenswear designers. The studio is a platform for young designers to share visions and introduce themselves to the fashion community.

Fashion insiders flocked to other happenings during the week including a leading international street and urban wear trade fair named Bread and Butter. Capsule, New York’s fashion and lifestyle trade event, is known for fusing the best high-end, progressive brands with directional, independent designers also forged new style connections that week. Held 12 times each year, Capsule gathers only the most innovative, sought-after brands from across the globe.

Distinguished Capsule brands that made a mark this year include Paris-born menswear and womenswear label April 77 inspired by alternative music and independent films that comprise artistic and cultural “youth culture” references. Norwegian menswear, womenswear and accessory brand Kaibosh also turned heads with a unique collection of hand crafted designs.

Berlin offers four different showing arenas for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, but designers must carry the self-motivation, unique vision and follow through to get there. Berlin Senate Administration for Economics, Technology and Research was instrumental in the building of the city’s fashion industry and Berlin Fashion Week. A message to creatives printed in this year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin Magazine is, ‘We help you help yourself.’

In fact, the organization is seeking to achieve creative commercial sustainability for professionalization by supporting the launch of a web-based Crowd-funding Berlin investment platform featuring ongoing creative projects along with trend reports, market news and event calendar.
