By now it’s no secret that fashion is having a bit of a love affair with sneakers. Designer sneaks have more than asserted their place as the “it” shoe of choice, and with Riccardo Tisci’s Nike collaboration dropping this week — not to mention Karl Lagerfeld outfitting both his Spring Couture and Fall Ready To Wear collections for Chanel with super-haute trainers — the trend doesn’t seem likely to fade into the background anytime soon. Of course, when a trend has asserted itself so firmly, it’s only natural that the brains behind it think up new ways to keep the masses interested. After all, variety is the spice of life. While die-hard sneaker heads will be more than happy to continue building their collection of high fashion hi-tops, those of us with a shorter attention span are looking for something fresh, which brings us to Spring’s new must-have, the slip-on. Heavily inspired by Vans’ iconic slip-on sneaker, they’ve all but usurped the footwear throne and declared their dominance with designers churning out everything from classic color blocks (Lanvin and Tim Coppens x Common Projects) to outrageous prints (Givenchy and Alexander McQueen) all the way through to red-carpet ready glitz (Giuseppe Zanotti and Saint Laurent). Whichever take strikes your footwear fancy, they’ll provide the perfect kick to your warm weather wardrobe. A word of caution, however, before you dive feet first into the wonderful world of slip-ons: one pair will hardly be enough. Better be prepared to clear out some space in your closet.
