Ample Hills Creamery | You don’t know ice cream until you’ve been to Ample Hills. This Brooklyn-based creamery makes life-affirming custards in eccentric flavors. Salted Crack Caramel, a sweet/savory explosion of happiness involving saltines, cookies and caramel, was the catalyst for Ample Hills’ fame and ongoing media recognition. It’s impossible to go wrong when choosing a flavor here because everything is made in-house, out of real ingredients. After a cone or two here, you’ll be asking, “Haagen-Dazs, who?” Quite honestly, no one who ever goes to Brooklyn should leave without stopping at Ample Hills.

Il Laboratorio Di Gelato | Lower Manhattan’s Il Laboratorio Di Gelato takes its science very seriously; but what better cause is there than ice cream? Over 200 flavors have been born in this enormous space, where customers can see the small-batch ice cream being made. This is the perfect place for those who are easily bored by the same flavors every day. Not many places offer cashew, wasabi or sweet potato ice cream!

OddFellows | If you love innovation in ice cream, OddFellows should be one of your staples. Flavors like Miso Cherry, Cornbread, Chorizo Caramel Swirl, and Black Pepper Strawberry sound bizarre but taste exceptional. The setup is as Brooklyn as the concept, but that’s really a good thing when it comes to artisanal ice cream. Prepare yourself for a perpetual line and get excited because the high-quality ice cream and signature cotton candy cones don’t disappoint. It isn’t ideal for the ice cream traditionalist, but adventurous souls should definitely visit OddFellows.

Sprinkles | Sprinkles won the world over with its adorable, delicious cupcakes. Now, it’s sweetening the deal with ice cream. Although this UES sweets spot is temporary closed due to a scuffle with the Department of Health (don’t worry–it’s not actually related to hygiene, just to the placement of equipment), this fan favorite is sure to be up and running in no time. Don’t miss the Cap’n Crunch and Salty Caramel flavors. While you’re there, you might as well eat a cupcake sundae or an ice cream sandwich with Sprinkles’ cookies or brownies.

Coolhaus Ice Cream Truck | Just when you thought ice cream couldn’t get any more creative, Coolhaus came along with its architecturally inspired gourmet desserts and flavor combinations to die for. If you’re lucky enough to live or work near their roving ice cream truck, run, don’t walk, to get a giant ice cream sandwich. This is not ice cream that you can possibly eat elegantly, but once you take the first bite you won’t even care. Serious Coolhaus fans (which you will inevitably become) can even join a monthly ice cream subscription. Avocado sea salt, balsamic fig and vinegar, blueberry sweet corn–the many exciting flavors at Coolhaus are always evolving and always exceptional.
