At one time, the cool fall weather was synonymous with drab, oversized clothing in muted tones. Luckily, fashion has come a long way over the years, and this season, it seems as if designers have delivered more than ever before in terms of fun fall styles. A perfect example is the metallic trend, which is slated to be one of the biggest of the season. All metallics, especially gold, had a particularly strong showing on the fall 2016 runways. Far from the shiny gold attire you’d find on the Las Vegas strip or in your grandma’s closet, designers like Rachel Zoe, Tibi, and Suno have taken metallics to a whole new (and actually wearable) level. A designer known to have a penchant for glamour, it should come as no surprise that Rachel Zoe incorporated the metallic trend in her fall collection, which included a silk slip dress with beaded lace panels and plenty of gold. The metallic trend was even applied to daytime separates, including a gold blouse and silver silk fringe skirt. In a collection filled with loose silhouettes and monochromatic dressing, Tibi designer Amy Smilovic relied heavily on ornate details, making metallics an obvious choice. Sending a model down the runway in head-to-toe gold, the designer proved that sparkling metallics can be completely chic. At Suno, the fall 2016 collection was comprised of larger-than-life florals, 3D prints, and other explosive elements, making for the ultimate combination of dramatic and dainty. Even the gold lamè dresses and pleated skirts adorned in bold prints and patterns retained a ladylike tone.

The trick to this trend is the styling. You’ll automatically want to accessorize with ultra-glam pieces since metallics, like gold and silver, are often associated with more formal pieces, but don’t! You definitely want to let your metallic piece shine (literally and figuratively), so keep accessories to a minimum. Metallic dresses are a great choice, since it’s a whole outfit in one and will require less styling and accessorizing. Don’t want to go for an all-over look? Start off slow by trying a metallic jacket, shoes, or bag.
